HGTV Ruined Me On DIY

I am obsessed with HGTV. I love that I can live vicariously through those homeowners, pretending I live in their fabulous, newly remodeled homes. I also like the fact that I don’t have to wait around too long for a satisfying reveal.

The problem? My mind thinks I can do home reno on my own and that I can complete it within a thirty-minute time frame.

Renovate your kitchen? Hey, it only takes an hour!

Repaint furniture? Why sure! It’ll only take you half an hour from start to finish!

Buy a vacation home with a budget of a million dollars? Make it TWO!

Remodel your home, no sweat – there’s a team of experts ready to work for you!

When I tell you that it took me four days to peel wallpaper off of ONE large family room wall, I do not exaggerate. After that debacle (and tons of sweat, tears and fabric softener), I vowed to never, ever, ever again buy a home that required tearing down wallpaper. Or reno. Or me holding a paint brush. Or all the DIY things.

My question today:

Does watching HGTV or any kind of home/interior design show motivate you to take action or do you just sit back and “wish”?

  1. I love watching those kinds of shows! I always "feel" like I can do things on my own, but yah, right!!! Took my six stinkin' hours just to paint the kitchen!

  2. I used to watch all the home renovation shows when I lived in Canada. And they do make it look easy, fast and simple. I'm in the midst of renovating our living room and closet – one week and counting. It's a lot harder in a foreign country to renovate….

    Have a lovely weekend!

  3. I get more done if I just go to it. Though I do love watching the shows and get inspired, watching them too much takes time I don't have if I want to get my projects done.

  5. HGTV is like Pinterest… I see SUPER awesome things I want to do, but {in the back of my mind} know that will never happen! I like gaining ideas though, to store and use, if the need arises!

  6. Sometimes I see something on HGTV that makes me want to change something, like storage or bathroom ideas. But since our house is only 3 yrs. old, I'm not really wanting to do anything yet. I made sure when we got this house that everything was built pretty much like I wanted it.

  7. My husband and I love watching HGTV whenever we get the chance (not often since we don't have cable though). We're being DIYers! We bought a forclosure in pitiful shape last year and renovated it. It took a lot of blood and sweat, but it was so worth it in the end. We love our home! :)
